Description

Title: Diabetes and the etiology of lower respiratory tract infections

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients are susceptible to a wide range of infections that interfere with the absorption of glucose into tissues. Diabetes is frequently mentioned as a separate risk factor for developing lower respiratory tract infections because it makes people more susceptible to various respiratory infections. While infections due to Streptococcus pneumonia or the influenza virus may be linked to increased morbidity and mortality, pulmonary infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus, gram-negative bacteria, and fungi may occur more frequently. The local and ciliary epithelial lining of the lung changes during infection. Diabetes results in decreased antibody defense against protein antigens, which increases susceptibility to pneumococcal infection. There is a well-established link between diabetes and pulmonary tuberculosis, and people with diabetes have a 4–5 times higher incidence of the disease than the general population. It is believed that diabetic patients’ impaired monocyte function may be a factor in their increased susceptibility to tuberculosis and/or poor prognosis. Diabetes patients are up to six times more likely than healthy people to require hospitalization for influenza virus or flu-like infections, and they are also more likely to experience infection complications. To lower hospital stays, fatalities, and medical costs, influenza and anti-pneumococcal vaccinations are advised. The most common candidiasis and mucormycotic are predisposed to by diabetes, especially uncontrolled diabetes.
