Description
Title: Impulse oscillometry
Abstract: A variety of tests, ranging from basic pulse oximetry to cardiopulmonary exercise testing, are used in pulmonary function testing. One of the most recent pulmonary function tests to be described is im- pulse oscillometry (IOS). It is based on the traditional forced oscillatory technique, which has been improved and modified in light of new information and developments. During typical tidal breathing, sound waves are used, providing data on oscillatory pressure-flow relationships and ultimately resistance and reactance. The large airways’ resistance is represented by the resistance at 20 Hz (R20). The total airway resistance is indicated by the resistance at 5 Hz (R5). Resistance in the small airways is indicated by the range (R5–R20). The elastic recoil of the peripheral airways is indicated by the reactance at 5 Hz (X5). In addition, reactance area and resonant frequency are measured. When spirometry is otherwise normal, IOS has significant applications in the diagnosis and management of asthma in children and the elderly. Other respiratory conditions like COPD, ILD, and supraglottic stenosis have been studied in relation to IOS.
