Description

Title: Self-management strategies for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that work: a scoping review

Abstract: Introduction: Few guidelines are currently available to support the creation of efficient programs for enhancing self-management in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). But given the widespread impact of this condition, it seems critical to pinpoint the elements of a self-management program that improve COPD patients’ health outcomes. The purpose of this review is to pinpoint the crucial components of a COPD patient’s self-management program that can influence quality of life, emergency room visits, and rehospitalization rates. Materials and techniques Three limiting criteria were used to find studies on the self-management of COPD in three databases (Medline, Cochrane, and CINHAL): published in the twelve years prior to November 2019, in English or French, and including patients over 40. The work process was directed by Prisma. Results: After applying limiting criteria and removing duplicate studies from the three electronic databases, the search turned up 361 studies. Using the titles and abstracts of 65 articles, it was determined that they were pertinent. 16 documents, though, were kept after thorough reading. The analysis of the included articles revealed four elements in COPD patients’ self-management programs: the intervention’s beginning stage, educational sessions, support, and monitoring techniques. Conclusions: While the self-management program’s initiation, educational sessions, support, and monitoring techniques were successful, more research is required to pinpoint the factors that have the greatest positive influence on COPD patients’ abilities and quality of life.
