Title: ventilation without invasive procedures for patients with altered levels of consciousness. A clinical review and useful advice
Abstract: In contrast to invasive mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation has many benefits and is now used more frequently to treat acute hypoxemic and/or hypercapnic respiratory failure. The preservation of airway defense mechanisms, a decreased need for sedation, and the avoidance of endotracheal intubation-related complications are a few of these benefits. Non-invasive ventilation has some drawbacks in addition to its benefits, one of which is severe encephalopathy. The rationale, supporting data, and disadvantages of using noninvasive ventilation in the context of hypercapnic and normocapnic patients with altered levels of consciousness are examined in this review article.
