Abstract: The cause of the specific type of chronic fibrosing interstitial pneumonia known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is unknown. The disease’s natural course is characterized by a steady decline in pulmonary function as well as general health and wellbeing. Although the disease has a variable and unpredictable course, the median survival time is between two and three years. Two fixed time tests that are frequently used in clinical practice are the twelve-minute walking test (12MWT) and the six-minute walking test (6MWT). We attempted to summarize the most recent research supporting the use of fixed time, self-paced walking tests in predicting outcomes for patients with IPF in this brief, clinically focused narrative review. Numerous studies have demonstrated the validity and reliability of the 6MWT as a straightforward, affordable, well-documented, fixed-time, and self-paced walking test that can also be used as a prognostic tool for patients with IPF. For this patient population, however, there is a need for specialized and approved reference equations. Filling the knowledge gap regarding the function of the 12MWT is also essential. We believe it would be helpful in assessing patients who are still in the early stages of the illness.
