Title: A narrative review of the therapeutic use of intravenous selenium in diseases of the immune system and the lungs
Abstract: Patients with these pathologies are more likely to die because of the oxidative stress brought on by sepsis, septic shock, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Selenium (Se) is a necessary mineral with cytoprotective and antioxidant properties that is closely linked to the efficiency of intracellular metabolic processes. In this context, the current study’s goal is to examine the therapeutic effects of intravenous selenium use while taking into account pathologies like ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), coronavirus disease, and SIRS, septic shock, sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and (COVID-19). In this narrative review of the literature, six key articles from the SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases were chosen and examined. As a result, studies showing the advantages of selenium in the inflammatory response, increasing GPx-3 activity and reducing inflammatory cytokines, as well as lowering the risk of VAP, shortening hospital stays, and mortality, were discovered. Se supplementation is therefore a viable option as adjuvant therapy and has positive evidence for acute respiratory diseases.
