Title: Asean-6 Study on Trade Openness and Economic Growth
Abstract: Examining the nonlinear relationship between trade openness (TO) and economic growth (EG) in the Asean-6 countries is the main goal of this paper (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, and Vietnam). The authors estimate the research model using the fixed-effect panel threshold approach in order to meet the predetermined research objectives. This study, in contrast to earlier research, discovers that TO has a nonlinear effect on EG and that TO has two threshold values. More specifically, TO contributes significantly to boosting EG before the first threshold value. However, when TO exceeds this threshold value, the impact level gradually declines. For example, when the second threshold value is exceeded, the effect of TO on EG is still positive but has a low value. The study’s findings indicate that high levels of TO (above the threshold value) without the addition of other complementary policies do not promote high-efficiency EG. Additionally, this study demonstrates that EG is both positively and negatively impacted by financial crises and domestic investment. The Asean-6 nations as well as researchers should take seriously the findings in this paper.
