Title: Port Performance’s Effect on Trade: The Case of a Few African States
Abstract: The main entry point to the world market continues to be maritime transport. Ocean ports are a crucial and essential part of the trade facilitation process. Ports serve as a kind of conduit for integrating into the world economy. Reducing trade costs, including transportation costs, tying supply chains together, and promoting international trade all depend on resourceful, well-connected container ports that are supported by consistent and regular shipping services. As a result, port efficiency is a crucial variable that can affect a country’s ability to compete internationally. However, the ports in Africa are run-down, lack necessary infrastructure, are crowded, and perform poorly. Africa’s ports and shipping do not always follow international trends and standards. This study aims to evaluate the current port performance of Africa and test the correlation between port performance and trade performance. The effect of port performance on trade has barely been explored in studies. Therefore, it was important to research how port performance affected trade in Africa. The study made use of panel data from 2005 to 2018 in its analysis. For estimation, an ARDL panel technique was employed. Results indicated that port efficiency has a favorable impact on trade. According to this study, expensive infrastructure is needed for African ports to be competitive. In order to maintain economic growth, increase port efficiency, and boost trade competitiveness, Africa must pursue a vigorous course of infrastructure development. Because the ports cannot accommodate further expansion without significant investments, African ports are currently inefficient and congested.
