Title: Mobility Restrictions and E-Commerce in the Madrid Center During the COVID-19 Lockdown: A Holistic Balance
Abstract: Due to the emergence of new purchasing and consumption practices, COVID-19 has resulted in a significant change in urban mobility as well as an unprecedented rise in e-commerce globally. In this setting, urban logistics is essential to the sustainability triple bottom line. The current document establishes a comprehensive understanding of the issue with the intent to I quantify resident e-commerce orders as well as the Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) required to deliver these packages, measuring their environmental impact, and (ii) compare the traffic generated in the Madrid Central area (low-emission zone) before and after the pandemic. The findings indicate that compared to normal levels, road traffic in the Madrid Central area decreased by roughly two-thirds, and by half in the case of LCVs. The quantity of delivered packages for e-commerce doubled. To a lesser extent than the expansion of e-commerce, this fact resulted in an increase in the number of LVCs used for package delivery in the central district and more pollution. Urban logistics’ biggest challenge in the post-Covid era is balancing residents’ high expectations for e-commerce deliveries with new mobility in big cities.
