Title: What Needs Do Senior Travelers Have? Evidence from Humble European Regions

Abstract: One of the industries in Europe that is expanding the fastest is tourism, with urban areas and major cities seeing the majority of this growth. However, for active senior travelers, remote locations can also provide tranquility, accessibility, and both untapped and unknown development potential. The goal of this paper is to analyze senior touristic behavior, including motivations and decision-making issues for senior travelers in 11 remote regions of nine European countries (Finland, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Spain, Ireland, and Greece). The information for this analysis was gathered from 1705 questionnaires. The goals of the research were met using a mixed-methods approach. For the purpose of gathering information from senior tourists, both interviews and the survey method were used. The main factors influencing senior tourists’ travel motivations and obstacles will be the focus of the current study. The TOURAGE project’s survey results show that remote areas have a significant potential for the growth of senior tourism. The potential for enjoying rest and silence is a major factor for senior respondents when deciding whether to take a vacation. The top five attraction factors for seniors are safety, nature, historical sites, quality of services, and accessibility to transportation. In addition, the interviews revealed that there are a number of significant issues that have a negative impact on the size of the senior tourism market in remote areas, including challenges in reaching seniors with tourist offers, a lack of promotion of local products targeted at seniors, and finally a lack of funding for the implementation of local projects promoting the growth of senior tourism.
