Title: Regional and Income Inequality in the United States: A Spatial Analysis
Abstract: The study of inequality must take into account how income inequality and regional inequality are influenced by space or geography. Using state and regional panel data spanning more than a century, this paper uses a multi-scale, multi-mechanism framework to map and analyze historical patterns of regional and income inequality in the United States (US). Before performing various geographical information system (GIS) analyses and statistical techniques, we organize the data around a number of pre-established geographical partitions to explore the patterns systematically and understand the role of spatial partitioning. We also look into how regional and income inequality vary based on location. In the US, we discover that there is spatial autocorrelation for both types of inequality. Though it fluctuates over time, the degree of spatial dependence for income inequality is decreasing while it is increasing for regional inequality. While regional inequality is at its lowest point, income inequality has reached its highest point in recent decades. Regarding the choice of partitioning, we note that for Census Divisions and Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) regions, within-inequality predominates. On the other hand, we observe that the inequality among Census Regions is most influenced by the overall inequality.
