Title: The EU’s Regional Value Chains in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sector: Characteristics
Abstract: Trade flows have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a drop in trade in 2020 that was particularly sensitive for pharmaceutical and medical products required to maintain public health. Pharmaceutical product production is dispersed across a network of international value chains. In order to identify the fragmentation of production chains both within the EU and around the world, this study set out to provide a detailed analysis of the EU’s situation in the sector of chemical and pharmaceutical product production. The value added produced in EU member states was broken down using international inter-country input-output tables. The length of the sourcing and selling value chains, the backward and forward participation, and the GVC and RVC participation indexes were calculated and compared to the major global hubs.
