Abstract: Although camping is a significant part of the tourism industry, there aren’t many practical studies that have examined how firms in this sector grow and tested Gibrat’s Law. When examining the regional effects of this sector’s growth, the authorities may find this information to be important. We test the stricter version of Gibrat’s Law using government statistics from the previous ten years, using a GMM framework to examine the growth trend of the campsites, how they carry over success and failure, and how volatile their size is. Gibrat’s Law is rejected because the first and third parts don’t apply to Norwegian campsites. We divided the sample into three parts to examine whether businesses of various sizes exhibit different dynamics. Large campsites follow a fundamentally different dynamic than small and medium campsites, which provides evidence of a threshold size. In particular, large campsites carry success or failure over years rather than gaining revenue stability from further size increases. For the remainder of the sector, the opposite is accurate. Each of the sub-samples results in at least one rejection of Gibrat’s Law. Finally, we add economic and firm-specific variables to the analysis to test additional hypotheses.
