Title: Case Study of SMEs in the Agricultural Sector in Sri Lanka: Factors Determining the Competitive Strategic Positions of SMEs in Asian Developing Nations
Abstract: The competition between businesses has quickly risen as a result of economic globalization. Therefore, it is crucial for SMEs to adopt strategic methods and compete- tive strategic positions in order to meet the many challenges of this time. This study used the agro-based SMEs in Sri Lanka as a case study to evaluate the variables that affect the competitive strategic position of SMEs in developing countries in Asia. The study estimated a binary logistic regression model to address the research topic using primary data from 463 SMEs. Seven significant strategic variables were found in the research, including gender, a strategic market location, sustainable business practices, marketing effectiveness, business reputation, and superior services. Innovation in product and marketing was also found, as well as business exhibition in a local setting and gender. Additionally, the study found and discussed seven unimportant variables that are important in developed nations, including production specialization, business experience, exhibition experience abroad, access to credit markets, high-quality product supply, research and development, and strategic firm location. In order to enable an improved and robust SME sector in Sri Lanka, the government and policymakers must take steps to create a more favorable business environment for SMEs to benefit from these variables in the near future.
