Title: An IPO Stress Management Model for Academic Staff Performance During COVID-19 Pandemic-Induced Work Transformations
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on all sectors of the services industry, including higher education. Almost all conventional educational institutions have been transformed into virtual organizations as a preventative measure. Academic staff members’ performance has been hampered by stress brought on by this pandemic-related work transition. In order to enhance employee performance both during and after the pandemic, the current study aims to examine the effects of leadership behaviors, e-training, and employment security on the stress management process. This study, which is based on the IPO (input-process-output) model, investigates how stress management, leadership style, and employment security affect the tasks and adaptive and contextual performance of teaching staff. Data were gathered from the teaching staff of Malaysian universities to test the conceptual model. For data analysis, the structural equation modeling method was used, and the mediational role of stress management was confirmed using bootstrapping and the maximum likelihood estimator. The study found that employee performance and stress management in virtual organizations are positively impacted by task- and relation-oriented leadership behavior, e-training, and employment security. Additionally, stress management serves as a full mediator in the relationship between leadership style and worker performance, whereas e-training, employment security, and worker performance only serve as partial mediators. By suggesting leadership behavior, e-training, and employment security as inputs in the stress management process to achieve the performance output of teaching staff, this study offers insightful contributions to the literature. Higher education institutions ought to step up to help teachers manage their stress levels for better results.
