Description

Title: A two-stage dual efficiency bootstrap DEA approach was used to measure the effectiveness of religious and secular microfinance institutions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Abstract: 127 microfinance institutions (MFIs) will have their financial and social performance evaluated with the aim of observing the effects of explanatory variables like “type,” “geography region,” and “secular and faith.” Design/methodology/approach: Microfinance institutions’ time-series performance analysis is determined in two steps. The first stage uses a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach to measure both the social and financial efficiencies. The effect on these determined efficiencies by the second stage of the Tobit regression Random effect Model is shown by the two explanatory factors along with faith and secular variables. Findings: The social performance from the first stage analysis is lower than the financial performance. The social behaviors with respect to religious factors are not significant when explanatory variables are taken into account. The financial score is more significant with religious and other explanatory variables when the regression is conducted in a group. If the performances (efficiencies) are kept at a high level, both religious and secular microfinance institutions are highly significant. Originality/Value: Based on the background and history of each microfinance institution, secular and religious variables are identified (MFI).
