Title: Managing Food Imports for Qatar’s Food Security
Abstract: Atar, a wealthy, heavily import-dependent open economy, plans to identify a set of alternative markets that can guarantee it a stable food supply chain and food security in the face of food supply disruptions caused, in part, by geopolitics and political instability in its traditional food source markets in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The four major food categories in the nation—meats, dairy, vegetables, and cereals—are the subject of this study. It develops a set of preferences and import substitution elasticities for each of these categories. To calculate the import-substitution elasticities for Qatar’s imports of meat, dairy, vegetables, and cereals, we used quarterly data on food imports from 2004 to 2017 and the RSDAIDS system. According to our research, Brazil, Jordan, and Argentina are Qatar’s top food suppliers, followed by India, Australia, and the Netherlands. In order to address its food security, Qatar can ensure sustained demand for food imports from the aforementioned nations.
