Title: Students in the Trento Autonomous Province’s Cognitive and Noncognitive Skills Development
Abstract: The study of what human capital (HC) is has a long history, and it culminates in the recognition that CSs and NCSs have a strong reciprocal relationship, as demonstrated by Heckman’s studies, and that HC and its growth are very important for both cognitive education (CSs) and personal life (NCSs). The current contribution examined the connection between CSs and NCSs in a sample of middle school students in the Trento Autonomous Province using Heckman’s methodology. The study’s second objective was to determine whether engaging students in educational teaching practices enhanced their personalities. A survey was conducted in the 2018–2019 academic year in addition to the use of administrative data (INVALSI data, 2015 and 2018) to confirm the connection between NCSs and CSs. Additionally, we looked at whether programs could improve NCSs and whether the personalities of the students (1522 students in 25 schools) were improved by education teaching behavior. A difference-in-differences model and the generalized least squares approach were used as methodological tools for the analysis to address the first and second questions, respectively. The main findings demonstrated that the levels of NCSs had an impact on the capacity to learn and enhance CSs; challenging teaching methodologies, particularly when coupled with initiatives aimed at raising their caliber, produced favorable outcomes. Last but not least, the study recommended that a larger, national survey that followed students from elementary to secondary school would enable a better understanding of the dynamics of CSs and NCSs.
