Title: Development of the Makassar Strait Area in Indonesia Based on the Marine Economy Sector
Abstract: After relocating from Jakarta on Java Island to Kalimantan, Nusantara, the new capital of Indonesia, is now formally situated in the interregional area of the Makassar Strait. While various economic infrastructures are still very limited, this region is anticipated to grow into the economic backbone of Indonesia. East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, and Central Sulawesi are all included in the Makassar Strait region. These provinces have a sizable amount of marine resource commodities and contribute economically to Indonesia’s economy as a whole. This study aims to analyze the primary sectors and inter-provincial linkages between each sector in the region using data from the 2016 Inter-Regional Input-Output (IRIO) table that was updated in January 2021. The findings demonstrate that each province has a distinct main economic development sector, which results in different strategies depending on each province’s quadrant. Furthermore, the marine industry is presumed to be on an industrial scale in order to support the objective of provincial development as the new engine of the Indonesian economy.
