Description

Title: Cox Proportional Risks Regression for Interval-Censored Data with Applications to Parental Job Loss and College Entrance

Abstract: This study used 376 subjects whose parental education levels were college-level or higher to conduct a survival analysis by fitting a Cox proportional hazards model to Korea Labor Panel data to examine the impact of parental job loss on children’s delayed admission to colleges and universities in South Korea. We contrasted three imputation techniques because the Korea Labor Panel data are interval- and right-censored: simple omission, imputation as the average of the left and right values of the interval, and multiple imputation. To evaluate their predictive and estimation performances, their integrated areas under the ROC curve (AUC) and mean square errors (MSE) were contrasted. The multiple imputation method was discovered to have a lower MSE than the other two methods during the simulation. However, there was no discernible difference in the iAUC values. No matter how the interval censoring imputation method was applied, parental job loss in the group where every householder had at least a bachelor’s degree was significantly associated with the first-born child’s delayed admission to a college or university. Particularly, the likelihood of college admission was nearly 53% lower for first-born children who experienced their parents’ unemployment by the time they turned 18 compared to situations where they did not. According to this analysis, the government ought to create an educational policy that provides adolescents who cannot count on parental assistance with psychosocial support.
