Description
Title: Evidence from Taiwan on the spatial spillover effects of household characteristics and fiscal expenditures on household consumption spending
Abstract: The main goal of this study is to investigate how household characteristics and government fiscal expenditures interact to determine average household consumption spending in counties and cities. Taiwan’s county-level and municipal panel data from 2000 to 2020 were examined using a spatial econometric model, the spatial Durbin model. The degree of overall spatial agglomeration of the average household consumption spending in Taiwan as well as the agglomeration status of particular counties and cities were examined using global spatial autocorrelation and local spatial autocorrelation. The empirical findings demonstrate that there is spatial autocorrelation in the average consumption spending per household across all counties and cities in Taiwan, and that the agglomeration of particular counties and cities is influenced by various ruling parties of the central government. In terms of direct effects, household characteristics such as average disposable income per household, average number of employees per household, and average living area per capita all have an impact on the average consumption spending per household in local counties and cities. In terms of the spatial spillover effect, household characteristics of the nearby counties and cities, such as the average disposable income per household and the average living area per capita, have an impact on the average consumption spending per household in the local counties and cities. The average consumption spending per household in counties and cities is surprisingly unaffected by local economic development spending or local spending on education, science, and culture. The study’s findings can be used as a guide when creating government policy.
