Description
Title: Food Waste and Socioeconomic Relations in a Few European Countries
Abstract: In the current paper, we attempt to analyze the socioeconomic factors that contribute to food waste in a number of European countries. Our study’s primary objective was to assess the amount of food wasted and compare it across European Union nations (except Cyprus due to the unavailability of food waste data). The analysis was based on data from the UN Environment Program’s Food Waste Index Report 2021, which was supplemented with socioeconomic data from EUROSTAT. For a more thorough analysis of the results, we developed three hypotheses that were put to the test using a variety of statistical techniques, including the distance from a fictitious object method, linear regression, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and hierarchical clustering. Our findings demonstrate that there is no correlation between the amount of food wasted in the various sectors (retail, food, and households), and none of the socioeconomic variables examined have an impact on the ranking of nations by the relevant variable.
