Title: Nutritional Content, Phytochemical Profile, and Health-Promoting Biological Activities of Custard Apple (Annona squamosa L.) Leaves
Abstract: Custard apples, or Annona squamosa L., are significant tropical fruits grown in the West Indies, South and Central America, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, India, Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Egypt. They are members of the Annonaceae family. Custard apple plant leaves have been investigated for their potential health advantages, which are attributed to a wide variety of phytochemicals. These substances include those with phenolic bases, such as proanthocyanidins, which are made up of 18 different phenolic compounds, primarily alkaloids and flavonoids. The biological effects of Annona squamosa leaf extracts (ASLs), such as their hepatoprotective, anticancer, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-obesity properties, have been investigated. The diversity of ASLs’ nutrients and phytochemicals was covered in the current article. The biological activities of ASL extracts, which were established by in vivo and in vitro experiments, were also discussed. According to a review of the literature, ASLs can be used as potential ingredients for the creation of pharmaceutical drugs and functional foods due to their phytochemical profile and health-promoting properties. Clinical trials are still required to ascertain the precise effects of ASL extracts on human health, even though there are sufficient results from in vitro and in vivo studies.
