Title: Unconventional Functions of Amino Acid Transporters: Role in Macropinocytosis (SLC38A5/SLC38A3) and Diet-Induced Obesity/Metabolic Syndrome (SLC6A19/SLC6A14/SLC6A6)
Abstract: In mammalian cells, amino acid transporters are expressed in intracellular membranes in addition to the plasma membrane. The typical job of these transporters is to move the amino acid substrates across the lipid bilayer; the transfer’s direction is determined by the gradients of the co-transported ions (Na+, H+, K+, or Cl+) and the amino acid substrates across the membrane. The membrane potential also influences the direction of amino acid transfer in the case of electrogenic transporters. Some of these amino acid transporters are also known to have a number of unusual functions in addition to their expected traditional ones. They play a part in intracellular signaling, controlling acid-base balance, and allowing viruses to enter cells, among other things. These biological roles of these transporters go beyond the logical homeostasis of amino acids thanks to these functions. In recent years, the unorthodox biochemical/metabolic processes macropinocytosis and obesity have been recognized as being regulated by specific amino acid transporters. This broadens the range of biological processes that amino acid transporters manage and regulate in both health and disease. The unusual roles played by selective amimacropinocytosis; amino acid-dependent Na+/H+
exchange; SLC38A5/SLC38A3; enteroendocrine cell; gut hormones; insulin signaling; appetite control; adipocyte differentiation; SLC6A19/SLC6A14/SLC6A6no acid transporters in macropinocytosis (SLC38A5/SLC38A3) and diet-induced obesity/metabolic syndrome (SLC6A19/SLC6A14/SLC6A6) are highlighted in this review.
