Title: The Complex Biological Effects of Pectin: Could Targeting Galectin-3 Improve Human Health?

Abstract: The only chimeric member of the galectin family is galectin-3. Despite the fact that galectin-3 has widespread physiological and regulatory effects, it also cooperates in many pathological environments. Pectin is made up of a variety of chemical compounds, including side chains, homogalacturonans, and rhamnogalacturonans. Predicting the effect of pectin on human health, particularly with regard to specific molecular modulation, requires an understanding of the major structural features of pectin. The potential regulation of the galectin-3 protein is one of the biological functions of pectin that has been studied. The goal of this review is to shed light on the relationship between the structure and function of pectins, their fragments, and their biological effects. The discussion highlighted by this review demonstrates various effects that have been studied in in vitro and in vivo experimental models, with intriguing and occasionally conflicting results, particularly in regards to galectin-3 interaction. The review shows that pectins are versatile food-derived molecules with a variety of bioactive uses. Galectin-3 inhibition by pectin has been reported in the past, but it is not a fully understood, experimentally supported, or generally accepted problem. It is shown that more research on the structural analysis and its relationship to the observed positive effects, as well as strong cause-and-effect hypotheses supported by solid data, are required to understand how various pectin molecules interact with galectin-3.
