Title: Sex Contributes in a Variety of Ways to Asthma Pathogenesis
Abstract: For the onset and exacerbation of asthma, sex is regarded as a significant risk factor. During childhood, boys are more likely than girls to have asthma; however, this trend reverses after puberty, with adult females being more likely than adult males to have asthma. Additionally, female patients have more severe asthma, as indicated by their higher rate of hospitalization and relapse after leaving the emergency room. According to preliminary research, type 2 innate immune responses are negatively regulated by male sex hormones while type 2 adaptive immune responses are positively influenced by female sex hormones. In clinical settings, it is debatable whether hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women increases the risk of developing asthma now or in the future. In conjunction with genetic or other environmental factors that control asthmatic immune responses in the airway mucosa, sex has recently been shown to have an impact on the pathophysiology of asthma. Based on our own data, we emphasize the significance of sex in the continuity of the allergic immune response in this narrative review, from allergen detection to Th2 cell activation. We also clarify how sex interacts with genetic and environmental factors to cause asthma attacks in women.
